Application Process

About Applying: All students currently in grades 8-11 who reside within the MMSD attendance area can apply for admission to Malcolm Shabazz City High School for the fall semester. Students who live outside of the MMSD’s district boundaries must first pursue Open Enrollment or pay the required MMSD tuition fees prior to submitting an application for admission. Proof of application for open enrollment in MMSD must be provided before an application can be accepted.

Applications for admission are accepted prior to the start of each semester through the online application process.

Shabazz has a multi-step admissions process. All applicants must first meet the eligibility criteria for admittance. Students in Tier 1 or Tier 2 who meet the eligibility criteria will be offered a spot at Shabazz.

Students in Tier 3 must first meet the eligibility criteria for admittance before proceeding to the selection process via lottery.

TIER 1: Applicants that are siblings of students who are currently attending Shabazz during the initial application period; and will continue to be enrolled at Shabazz in the following school semester/year

TIER 2: Children of a current Shabazz staff member.

TIER 3: All other students who meet the eligibility criteria will enter the selection process via lottery *Please note:

a) Students who qualify for Tiers 1 or 2 MUST ALSO meet the eligibility criteria for admittance.

b) Students who qualify for Tiers 1 or 2, who live outside of MMSD attendance boundaries must first complete the Open Enrollment process

c) For students with disabilities, regardless of Tier, an offer of admission shall not be construed to override or supplant a placement determination made by an IEP or 504 team consistent with the student’s right to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment as required under the the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and its regulations(34CFR 300.116) and/or Section 504 of the ADA (34 CFR 104.34(b)).

The goal of the multi-step admissions process is to maximize enrollment opportunities and promote equity in student admissions.

The selected students and families, who decide to accept an offered spot at Shabazz, MUST then be part of a Welcome Session with our Principal and Intake Team in order to secure their spot for enrollment the following semester.

**Not attending this session will result in forfeiture of the student's spot at Shabazz**

If any applicant is not selected, declines an offer of admission, or later leaves Shabazz to attend a different school or program, the applicant must reapply if they wish to be considered for admission in the future.

Students in Tier 3 who meet criteria will be eligible for the selection process via lottery. Selection is done by random drawing of names until available spots are filled.

The goal of the multi-step admissions process is to maximize enrollment opportunities and promote equity in student admissions.

Step 4: New Family Orientation Session

Students and their families who accept a spot at Shabazz, MUST then be part of a Welcome Session with our Principal and Intake Team in order to secure their spot for enrollment the following semester. ** Not attending this session will result in forfeiture of the student’s spot at Shabazz**

For students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP), the IEP team, including one or more staff members from Shabazz, the student and family will meet. This meeting is held to ensure services needed to support academic and social and emotional growth and success can be provided within the full inclusion model of our school.
