Building Inclusivity Through Music At West High School

At West High School, the choir program is a space where students of all backgrounds and abilities come together to create music, build friendships, and support one another.

A choir director at West High School for 21 years, Anthony Cao is dedicated to providing a welcoming, inclusive environment where every student feels a sense of belonging.

The West Choir program includes three main ensembles: Chorale, typically for ninth and 10th graders; Treble, a medium-level group for treble voices; and Concert, for 11th and 12th graders. Additionally, West offers a Pop Vocal program, which blends grade levels and provides a more flexible, personalized singing experience, allowing students to explore music in a way that suits their strengths and personalities.

In Pop Vocal Styles, students like Lucy Larson thrive. A talented singer with a strong sense of pitch, Lucy has experienced success in both chorale and the small, supportive environment that Pop Vocal offers. She recently earned a solo for an upcoming concert, and her classmates erupted in applause—a reflection of the supportive and uplifting spirit that defines the choir.

Asha Shukla, known for her infectious joy, has experienced belonging and success  as a member of Chorale. The larger group environment allows Asha to be authentically her while also being able to lean on the support of her choir mates during times of need.

Anna Moffit, parent of a West High School choir student, is grateful to see that every student's contribution is recognized and valued. "Many times students are able to participate but it is great to know that students with various needs are highlighted and celebrated instead of siloed."

Cao noted that students help to create a welcoming environment by celebrating others. “When students see their peers being celebrated for a solo, or great suggestion or simply their enthusiasm encourages them to uplift one another.”

Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, regardless of skill or ability, requires effort. When necessary Cao modifies sheet music for students who need a simpler layout, making it easier for them to focus on their parts without feeling overwhelmed. Cao also leans on the support of SEAs who are able to provide academic and emotional support. Their support ensures that every student receives the time and attention they need to thrive within larger choral settings.

Beyond singing, the choir program helps students connect with the world around them. Cao hopes the music students perform and discuss broadens their understanding of different perspectives and cultures.

“Making music together is one of the most important experiences students will have in their lives,” Cao reflects. “I hope the music we sing helps them to better understand the world around them and how they fit into it”
