Hamilton Middle School Choir Lifts Its Voice in Capitol Performance
The Velma Hamilton Middle School 8th Grade Choir took center stage at the Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda on Thursday, March 13, as part of Wisconsin Music Educators Association's Capitol Concerts series. Directed by vocal teacher Margaret Jenks, Hamilton's was the only middle school ensemble in the state to be invited to perform, in celebration of National Music in Our Schools Month.
With 115 talented and enthusiastic students, the choir presented a program titled “Call to Action,” a name chosen by the students themselves after studying the "hero’s journey" in literature and how it parallels musical structure. The repertoire is diverse and dynamic—much like the students—featuring a range of pieces that challenge and inspire young musicians.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students,” said Jenks. “Performing in such a historic space is not only thrilling, but a powerful reminder of the role music plays in bringing people together.”
Adding to the excitement, legislators and senators representing Hamilton students were in attendance, as were members of the students' families and Capitol staff.
“The selection of Hamilton’s choir is a testament to the strength of music education in our district,” said Dan Davidson, MMSD's director of fine arts. “These students are dedicated and passionate, and those attributes were on full display for all who were fortunate enough to be in attendance to enjoy.”
