Greetings families, students, and Shabazz community members,

It is climate survey time again. Every year the MMSD sends out surveys to staff, students, and parents to receive feedback on the overall climate of the district. Shabazz appreciates everyone who takes the time to respond to this survey so we can get a picture of how we are doing at Shabazz. These surveys also provides our community a useful comparison to how we are doing in the district relative to other schools.

Last year, our students completed a similar survey. Although many of our results were in line with the other high schools, some results stood out. The following items distinguished Shabazz from the high school average:

  • Statement: I use teacher feedback to improve my work. 82% of high school students agreed or strongly agreed. 91% of Shabazz students agreed or strongly agreed.
  • Statement: I believe I can learn, 86% of high school students agreed or strongly agreed. 97% of Shabazz students agreed or strongly agreed.
  • Statement: In my school, students help each other learn. 61% of high school students agreed or strongly agreed. 74% of Shabazz students agreed or strongly agreed.
  • Statement: I feel safe at my school. 64% of high school students agreed or strongly agreed. 80% of Shabazz students agreed or strongly agreed.
  • Statement: The adults at my school encourage me. 74% of high school students agreed or strongly agreed. 89% of Shabazz students agreed or strongly agreed.

We believe the differences in these scores provide evidence to support our beliefs in the effectiveness of our learning model at Shabazz and the vision that guides our work. Our focus on supporting students in taking positive risks and developing the skills to support other students provides the foundation for students to develop confidence and competence within a safe learning community.  We believe it is also the foundation for the results we saw on last year’s survey.

Once again, we appreciate our parents, staff, and students support in gathering their input and feedback so we can assess our progress in creating a model for a safe, authentic, and engaging educational experience. Take care of yourselves and take care of each other.
