Project Green Teen (PGT) Class Information – Shabazz City High School

All students attending Shabazz prior to 2nd Semester 2017/18 are eligible to take this class.

All subjects meet graduation requirements and are taught through an environmental science focus. Designed to be a fun, hands-on learning experience with high academic expectations, students learn what ecology is by experiencing it in the real world! Credit areas may include English, math, biological science, natural science, health, physical education, service learning, art, and ¼ extra credit earned on the trip (see below). Additional credits available: math and elective community service credit (work with service organizations outside of school hours).

This is a semester class. By enrolling, students are making a commitment to this class for the remainder of the school year. Students completing PGT advance rapidly, both academically and personally, and tend to have a more mature approach to post-high school interests and a renewed passion for learning. Coursework is rigorous and expectations are high. Students receive extra support. Attendance and  participation are crucial to success and obtaining credit in each class. Students who have more than four absences in any class will not likely earn credit in that class. Curriculum is intentionally designed to allow students to connect academics to real-world learning. May Trip - Students go on a 7-day trip (Friday, May 11 – Friday, May 18) designed to use all of the new skills learned during their classes. During this week, students work with many different organizations to complete authentic service projects that benefit the community.

The fee for the trip portion of this class is $200.00 per student, due by February 23, 2018. This breaks down to $25/day for meals (22 total), transportation, and supervision. Because staff write grants to offset the student fee portion, field trip fees are reduced to well below actual costs. Financial ability will not prohibit ANY student from participating in this class. If you need financial assistance, please talk to Robert before February 16, 2018.  Missing this deadline limits what we are able to do to help because we run out of time. Multiple payments spread over time are acceptable.

We follow a “More if you can, less if you can’t” model to finance these learning opportunities. Please contribute more if you can.

Thanks,
